Trusted Legal Counsel In Everett And Beyond

Do You Have A Dispute With Your Long-Term Partner?

Unmarried or same-sex couples may have rights similar to those of married couples, but it is not uncommon for disputes to arise at the end of the relationship. At Cogdill Nichols Rein Wartelle Andrews, our attorneys have extensive experience guiding clients through even the most complex family law matters. Trust our experience and depth of legal knowledge to guide you toward a successful resolution.

What Are Washington State’s Laws On ‘Common Law’ Marriages?

The laws relating to domestic partnerships and meretricious relationships are in a constant state of flux. Currently, the law does not cover same-sex partnership or domestic partnerships to the same degree as a more “traditional” marriage. There is an acknowledgement that two people living together in a marriage-like relationship creates a legal standard for property ownership and property division when they separate. These are the same legal standards that are applied to a traditional marriage as far as division of property and division of assets.

We believe that these partnerships, and the dissolution of a long-term relationship, should be afforded the same rights, responsibilities and respect. Our lawyers are vigilant in remaining current with recent legislative changes in order to better represent our clients.

Comprehensive Assistance For Cohabiting Partners

Our experience in domestic partnerships and meretricious relationships is not limited to family-related issues matters such as child custody or division of property. Countless couples have approached our firm to provide advice regarding estate planning. Developing a comprehensive estate plan allows an individual to determine the division and distribution of assets upon his or her death. People involved in a meretricious relationship find themselves at the mercy of the state or their family if the proper estate planning documents are not in place.

Additionally, our firm has helped clients draft prenuptial agreements that clearly indicate the property and assets that were brought to the relationship by each party. A version of the postnuptial agreement can be drafted and maintained over the course of the relationship to clarify and organize property, assets or debts acquired through the duration of the partnership.
